One of Hartford 's Vintage Gems Teams Up With One of Its New Jewels
Beginning Monday, July 8 th the YMCA of Greater Hartford teams up with The Learning Corridor to provide summer aquatic services. This collaboration will provide swim lessons, open swim, lifeguard training, CPR/First Aid courses and private rental opportunities. These services will be available to all through very affordable membership fees. For example, a youth membership will be $15 in total for July & August. We also have Family Membership rates. There will be a special registration on July 8 & 10 from 5-7pm at the Commons Building , 43 Vernon Street (Pool Entrance).
The YMCA of Greater Hartford is known for its expertise in aquatic services and is a national leader in the character development movement, receiving the “Centers of Excellence Award from the Character Counts Coalition in 1997. The Learning Corridor who has lifted the Frog Hollow and Barry Square neighborhood character with its beautiful 16-acre campus felt this collaboration was perfect. Kathy Townsend, Director of Urban Initiatives at the YMCA stated, “The YMCA wanted to make services more accessible to the Hartford neighborhoods in the south end and this has enabled us to do exactly that.”
The Learning Corridor has been in operation for two years and is working towards making the campus more community oriented with its limited budget. Marie Spivey, CEO of The Learning Corridor stated, “We have this beautiful indoor pool and it should be used by everyone. Every child and adult in this neighborhood should learn how to swim and have access to CPR and First Aid training.”
The YMCA of Greater Hartford serves over 69,000 people in its 11 branches covering 33 towns in the capitol region. It is celebrating its 150 th anniversary of service.
